Reflection

In addition to working on the Physics Licensure, I am also a graduate research assistant. My assistantship allows me to work with a robotics team in a rural area. Part of my role is to develop engaging curricula and activities that inspires and prepares the students to pursue and succeed in careers in STEM. From this experience I have presented at conferences on our research findings and traveled to visit the team often. Working with this project I have learned the importance of culturally relevant learning activities and how culture can be defined and shaped by multiple factors. When I first began the project the students’ culture as a group was based on their community, their racial identity, perceptions of others and so much more. The students were aware of these factors and how they were shaping them. Their culture was one of “this is how people perceive us.” Through interviews with the students I have noticed that over time that culture has changed to “this is how people perceive us, we want to change that.” and even further to “this is who we are.” We often define culture by geographic regions, racial and ethnic identities, and socio - economic status. This group of students has shown me another aspect to defining culture and that it is much more fluid than I initially believed. There are some aspects of culture that are not as fluid, such as the ones mentioned earlier and maybe the students’ individual cultural identity. However, the culture of the group has become one of family, success, determination, and pride that I have been fortunate enough to watch evolve.
