INTASC 1:

Learner Development

Learner Development

The teacher understands how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences.

Reflection

Each learner is unique and has their own pattern of development. In a given course there can be a variety of developmental patterns. As an instructor, it is my responsibility to provide every learner with opportunities that are meaningful and appropriately challenging to ensure their success in gaining the content knowledge. In the classroom, I differentiate instruction to make the content and learning experiences accessible to all learners. To address this standard, the lecture notes were often printed out for some learners and the graphic notes organizers were swapped for a match and glue activity. Also, when we did a squishy circuits activity, I created a different activity that used alligator clips rather than the insulating and conductive dough for one learners’ needs. On the project I adjusted the group sizes and assessment criteria as well. Instead of assessing based on the students’ ability to properly design and connect circuits, some learners were assessed based on ability to identify different types of circuits their group used and explain how or why they did or did not work.
